The Last Star (The 5th Wave #3)

The wait is finally over. I’m not one to anticipate for a book but for this one I had no choice. This last book is not what I expected it to be. When I first started reading it, I felt that it was dragging just like book 1. Halfway into the book it started catching my attention. To be honest I envisioned a different outcome.

In the last book we learned that Ringer has been enhanced just like the Silencers. She thought she could run away and get back to Ben and the rest of the crew like nothing happened but the Others clearly were already one step ahead of her. Her goal was to go back to her crew and hand over Evan and that’s exactly what happens.

Yes you guessed right, Cassie had to follow one last time and make the ultimate decision. Which was to basically go kill Vosch and blow up the spaceship. And that’s exactly what she does. She sacrifices for the greater good.

For some reason I still expected her to show up while Evan left to scout out more Silencers but if that happened then the author probably wouldn’t have called this book “The Last Star.” Because after all Cassie/Cassiopeia is the last star. If it was up to me I probably would’ve gave it a different ending. It’s fiction, so anything could happen.

The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave # 2)

I know I complained a lot on the last book because I didn’t enjoy the first half so much. But boy did it end with a big bang. I admit, it got me excited about reading this second book in the series. If you know me then you know I don’t start a series unless it’s completed. Basically I don’t handle suspense well. But yes, I did break my rule only because of a coworker.

Let me start by saying a lot has happened and yes, I did get more backstory of the side characters. Especially how each of them got their nicknames at the camp.

Sometimes when I’m reading, although the storyline leads you to believe that there’s no way an  important character might’ve survived their death, I hold on to this oddly impossible hope that they might just show up in a chapter and prove me right. Sometimes it does happen and other times it doesn’t but I still need to hold onto my flicker of hope. And guess what? It did happen, Evan kept his promise to Cassie but trouble followed him.

Things are just getting messier and I’m not sure how the author will fix it in the third book. Ringer (another main character) is pushed to new limits and looks like the impossible is becoming possible in a interestingly new twist. This series is nothing like “The Host” by Stephenie Meyer, which I loved so dearly. The aliens are referred to as “others” in this series. And I wouldn’t really call them the peaceful type. I feel like it’s sweet meets deadly. Probably more on the hard core side.

I honestly don’t know what I’m expecting from the next book, as our relationship got a bumpy start from the beginning. It’s a two month wait until the third book officially comes out. Until then I’ll have to fill the void with my “to read” pile.

The 5th Wave

I thought I would see the movie first and then read the book because in my past experiences books were better than the movie itself. Usually it takes me a chapter or two to get into the story. But so far in this book even after 10+ chapters I wasn’t getting pulled in the story as I would like.

It starts off with Cassie (the main character) who is talking through her journal from present day working her way back to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th wave. Basically discussing  how she ended up where she is now. It got confusing when I got to the 2nd Part because I thought I was reading from the point of view of Cassie but after a few pages I learned that it was from the point of view of another character named Ben (who is connected to Cassie). On every part, you don’t know who’s talking until after a few pages in.

It got somewhat interesting when Evan came into the scene. But eventually I realized I didn’t like it from the beginning because I didn’t want to hear all the thoughts that the characters were thinking or even the conversations they were having in their minds. The things they thought and said just sounded really morbid to me. But then I started thinking that it’s probably because of the world they were in and the situations they had to deal with. It made me think how would I have reacted or would I have felt like them if I were in their shoes?

So I continued to read and let me tell you that it gets good, really good. We’ll see how the next book turns out.
